as you can see I’ve been fiddling with the look and layout of the the blog. And so far I’m pretty happy with it – except the mountains are all squished and weird, it’s a work in progress.

It looks fine to me...but the old one did as well.

interesting and worthwhile to spend time with...

If you haven't already tried it -- take a look at the pixel dimension properties of the stock image that was provided with your new theme. It's probably located in a folder in the theme's root directory.
Then, open your original header image in Photoshop and resize the image or the canvas to match the stock image dimensions. If you're lucky, that should eliminate the "tile" effect.
