This scam is happening in Marana but please be aware of the tactics these criminals are using...............
Marana police are warning people about a new scam that's been targeting Arizonans, especially the elderly.
Here's how the scam works:
- Suspect 1 knocks on the door and tells the elderly resident that he is with a local company and he needs to get into the backyard to take some measurements.
- The victim meets Suspect 1 in the backyard.
- Suspect 1 engages the victim by having them help measure or record measurements on his clipboard.
- While they are busy in the backyard, Suspect 2 enters the unsecured house and ransacks it. He mainly takes jewelry and currency.
- Suspect 1 and Suspect 2 communicate by cell phone. It appears that shortly after Suspect 1 receives a call (presumably from Suspect 2), he tells the victim he is done. Suspect 2 is inside the house for approximately 20-30 minutes.
In two cases, a safe was stolen. It is unknown if the suspects in all the cases are the same or if there is a group out there doing this same scam. The incidents generally occur between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm, and can happen any day of the week.
Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or 88-CRIME.
